A lot of people come to me too long after the start of the symptoms, they hope their heel pain will simply pass with time. While mild discomfort can sometimes settle, plantar fasciitis is not something I recommend ignoring. Without proper care, it can become more persistent, harder to treat and lead to further issues can could be avoid.
When the plantar fascia becomes strained, small microtears can develop. If you continue putting stress on it without addressing the cause, your body doesn’t get the chance to heal properly.
Over time, the pain can become more intense and more frequent. What often starts as a sharp pain with your first steps in the morning can turn into constant discomfort throughout the day. Many people also begin to change the way they walk to avoid pain, which can lead to new problems in the ankles, knees, hips, or lower back.
In some cases, long term strain can lead to thickening of the tissue or the development of a heel spur. While heel spurs are not always painful, they are a sign that the foot has been under stress for a long time. Recovery at this stage usually takes longer and requires more consistent treatment.
The good news is that early care makes a big difference. Simple steps like reducing high impact activities, wearing supportive shoes, and avoiding long periods of standing can help calm the irritation. Gentle stretching of the calf muscles and the sole of the foot is also very effective. Rolling your foot over a cold bottle or a ball can ease tension and reduce pain.
If symptoms persist, seeing a physiotherapist can help you understand what is causing the strain in the first place. Often it is a mix of tight muscles, weak foot support, or unsuitable footwear. It is really important to see a professional in the early stages, before the pain gets too frequent and severe.
Your feet carry you through your day, so it’s worth paying attention when they start to complain. Addressing plantar fasciitis early can save you from months of discomfort and help you stay active and pain free.
